The stage manager is a role with a lot of responsibility. In this session we will look at what you can expect from your student stage manager and how to train them when stage management is not your forte.

A !re%red” K-12 music/theatre teacher, Kris% Ross-Clausen has become an interna%onally rec-
ognized expert on venue safety and technical theater pedagogy. In addi%on to being quoted by
NPR and Newsweek as well as interviewed for numerous podcasts including the Event Safety
Alliance’s, she's presented on theatre safety for the Alliance for Wisconsin Theatre Educa%on,
United States Ins%tute for Theatre Technology, AVIXA - the Audiovisual and Integrated Experi-
ence Associa%on, Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Associa%on, the Kennedy Center Ameri-
can College Theater Fes%val, SETC, and many others.
She graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a Master of Arts in Theatre Re-
search: Theatre for Young Audiences with an emphasis in technical theatre pedagogy where she
wrote her thesis on what Wisconsin HS theatre teachers know about safety (not enough).
Kris% co-chaired the commi\ee that revised the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruc%on
standards in Theatre, leading the Technical Theatre strand and making Wisconsin one of the first
states to give equal recogni%on of the skills used behind the scenes.
She worked with the Na%onal Federa%on of State High School Associa%ons and the Educa%onal
Theater Associa%on as a contributor to their online theatre safety class for HS teachers and par-

A member of IATSE local 470 she has worked on thousands of shows, concerts, and expos rang-
ing from Broadway tours to community theatre, industrial and educa%onal produc%ons K-12
including touring with the North American tours of Mamma Mia, War Horse and Priscilla,
Queen of the Desert. She is an IATSE Trained Trainer and has provided training on all facets of
technical theatre to professional stagehands.
As an Actors Equity Stage Manager she has worked with Forward Theatre, First Stage, Timber
Mill Theater, The University of Wisconsin Band show, and a special appearance by His Holiness,
the Dalai Lama among other events.
She founded the Technical Theater for Performing Arts Teachers summer ins%tute at the Univer-
sity of Wisconsin - Madison and leads the new Stage and Entertainment Technology program at
